In this chapter, consideration will be given to the equation which is adjoint to the diffusion equation, in the cases of one and two energy groups. The solutions of adjoint equations have a physical significance as the “importance” of neutrons within a system. The adjoint function can be used to obtain the response to the small perturbation, and a simplified overview is provided in this chapter, with the first order perturbation theory.
