For Africa to preserve its rich cultural heritage, the enduring efficacy of the traditional communication methods remain a powerful, often underestimated asset. For millennia, African societies have depended on oral tradition and folklore as their primary means of passing along knowledge, history, and tales from one generation to the next. Even with the advancement of modern communication technologies, oral tradition and folklore are not relics of the past but vital living organisms of the African cultures. These traditional tools of communication offer a unique and efficient way to foster interpersonal relationships, preserve culture, and foster a sense of community. Oral tradition and folklore can be useful tools for environmental communication capable of disseminating knowledge on the natural world, fostering profound behavioural change and reinforcing indigenous environmental knowledge systems. This chapter focuses on the potential contribution of traditional African communication methods to environmental communication to preserve and sustain the natural world. This chapter begins with a discussion on the potential of oral tradition in environmental communication, then moves on to the potential of folklore in sustainable environmental communication.
