This paper presents a study on the effect of silicate compounds on the pull-off strength of bricks used in historic construction. Various products with hydrophobic properties, including potassium and sodium silicates and siloxane formulations, were considered to determine their effects on brick durability, moisture resistance and protection against degradation. The results of the study showed that the use of silicate-based formulations leads to an improvement in the mechanical properties of bricks, including pull-off strength, especially with longer seasoning. Silicification of the surface of building ceramics can be used not only as a method of strengthening the internal structure in the near-surface zone, ensuring sufficient bond strength to support reinforcement system such as composites, but also as a method of strengthening the structure of historic building ceramics subjected to weathering. The authors have successfully implemented this solution in two key areas: The structural strengthening of composite-reinforced structures and the conservation of historic roof coverings. In the latter, the need to preserve the original roof tiles and insulating elements, made it essential to strengthen the roof tiles by silicification in situ.

摘要
