This chapter presents the central components of a model for the study of digital comics. The chapter begins with a discussion of how we might speak about digital comics, surveying previous approaches to categorisation, before proposing six core elements of digital comics’ materialities: identifier, file type, software, firmware, hardware and producers/readers. While not exhaustive, the chapter proposes that these categories all have something to offer the study of digital comics, and each is explored in detail. In its discussion of software, the chapter also looks at two different approaches to the creation of digital comics: comics-as-files and comics-as-apps. Similarly, the chapter’s discussion of hardware looks at different types of relationships between digital and printed components of mixed-media works, outlining five different approaches. In this chapter, each of the six core elements is discussed in isolation.

Six Core Elements

摘要
