Sublimity in Miniature: Aesthetic Viewing and the Miniature Forests of Cape Horn
摘要
The mode by which we view the world greatly affects our appreciation, valuation and orientation to objects, persons, places and things. Amongst the many modes by which we view the world, an aesthetic lens offers an alternative to the self or group interest that dominates our day-to-day valuations. This chapter argues for a change of ordinary perception to an aesthetic one through the analysis of Immanuel Kant’s description of sublimity and applies it to the miniature forests of Cape Horn. By seeing immensity in miniature, an inversion of the typical notions of sublimity, the program of biocultural conservation presents us with an opportunity to reflect on our engagements with the world and the many ways of valuation we deploy in understanding, inhabiting and appreciating that world.
