Climate Change and Migration in South Asia: Trends, Obstacles, and Policy Practices
摘要
Climate change has been identified as a key driver of migration in South Asia, mainly due to the region’s geographical location, economic structure, and political dynamics. Several interconnected factors and consequences are evident in terms of addressing the narrative of environmental displacement among the eight countries. This chapter of the book presents a thorough examination of secondary literature, focusing on the climate migration scenario in South Asian nations. It critically assesses treaties related to climate issues, the degree of participation in global climate forums, the repercussions of climate migration, and the political responses influenced by regional geopolitical dynamics. The chapter’s primary objective is to highlight the parallels and discrepancies in various practices across South Asian nations, with each nation’s contribution evaluated separately using the previously listed criteria. Additionally, this chapter aims to assess the scope of prospective cooperation projects between these adjacent countries, taking into account geopolitical factors. Migration caused by climate change requires a multifaceted strategy. For the strategies to be successful, inclusive policies and robust infrastructure must be developed. To mitigate the effects of migration, international cooperation should be promoted, and enhanced global cooperation is required.
