Mesh Stiffness Comparison of Different Models in Polymer Spur Gear Analysis

A computational framework is introduced in this study to examine the gear mesh stiffness of polymer gears. Given that polymer gears exhibit lower stiffness than metallic gears, the proposed methodology involves an extensive analysis to ascertain the optimal number of teeth to be modelled based on the gear's specific geometry and material properties. Specifically, a comparison between one tooth model and three tooth model was conducted. This research examines the dynamic behaviour of polymer spur gears by employing a static analysis methodology. It involves testing a pair of spur gears made from PA12, where the gear teeth are conceptualised as cantilever beams subjected to a moving load along the involute profile. This chapter specifically aims to compare the gear mesh stiffness (GMS) derived from different numerical modelling techniques.
