Experimental Investigation of Adhesively Bonded Single Lap Joint in Nautical Applications

Several attentions are considered when nautical structures; this is due to hard environmental conditions. For this reasons, conventional joining techniques are always replaced by adhesively bonded joining techniques particularly when Glass Fiber Reinforced composites are used. The aim of this study is to evaluate the performance of a single lap joint bonded GFRP used in marine industry. We started by tensile characterization of the adhesive used crystic621. Results show that it has an elasto-plastic behavior with a brittle fracture. Then we focus on the strength of a single lap joint and we carry out the study on test specimens cut from boat’s hull manufactured in nautical industry. 2D Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is used to observe crack evolution and We found that maximum stress is about 3.6 Mpa obtained for a strain of 4%, the fracture of the joint shows that the adhesive has good anchorage with the fiberglass Interface so that we can say we obtained a cohesive failure with low substrate pull-out.
