The final chapter in this volume considers the potential role of applied bioarchaeology in a world of ever-increasing authoritarianism, social division and uncertainty. Bioarchaeology can bring the past to life in ways which are intimate and immediate, presenting new perspectives on human behaviour. Applied bioarchaeology can use these insights in resourcing, supporting, and challenging us to rethink how we understand ourselves and how we interact with others, at a time when such reflection is more important than ever. The first part of this chapter draws out common themes emerging from the diverse applied bioarchaeology projects making up this book: the importance of care and compassion as core principles informing action; the power of empathy; the centrality of identity; the opportunities for personal and collective empowerment; and the scope for countering blind acceptance of historical (and current) orthodoxies. The second part reflects on future directions for applied bioarchaeology, arguing for creative and collaborative approaches, grounded in evidence but unafraid of emotional connection, and positioned firmly within contemporary social and political contexts. Strategies for wider public engagement, including academic and community partnerships in research, creative information-sharing, and media experimentation are discussed, and applied bioarchaeology’s potential contributions to modern public discourse are highlighted.
