Antimicrobial resistance does not remain in the area where the antibiotics that selected for it were applied. Animals carrying bacteria that are resistant to antimicrobials are transported, often over relatively short distances, but also on a global scale. In addition, this transport can cause deterioration of the health of animals, resulting in infection that must be treated with antibiotics. During transport to slaughterhouses, resistant pathogens are often exchanged between animals of different batches, causing a risk for contamination of the meat with resistant bacteria. The role of wildlife in spreading of antibiotic resistance is at present poorly documented, but the available data suggest that it is very complex. Any surveillance and monitoring systems should be designed from a One-Health perspective. Considerable spreading occurs through foodstuffs, but possibly not as much as previously assumed. Resistance selected for in the livestock sector reaches human health care by a variety or routes. The resistance against critically important antimicrobials for human health care must also be viewed from the One-Health perspective. Research should prioritize understanding of the complex interactions between the various reservoirs and selection spots for antimicrobials resistance.
