Vivekananda reinterpreted his guru, Ramakrishna’s spirituality, to claim that Hinduism was superior to other faiths, portraying it as a tolerant religion that encouraged reform and humanitarian activities. Ramakrishna was known for his catholicity. He believed that no spiritual path was inferior to another and that every religion led the faithful to God. From Ramakrishna’s perspective, God created different faiths to help those at various stages of knowledge, much like a mother cooks separate dishes to meet the dietary needs of her children. Vivekananda turned Ramakrishna’s spiritual perspective into a religious hierarchy. He advanced the idea that Hinduism was tolerant and preached the principle of equality because, unlike Christianity and Islam, it grasped the highest truth, the oneness of all creation. In other words, Hinduism was superior to other faiths because it understood that all religious paths were equally effective in leading us to the ultimate truth. Furthermore, because Hinduism was inclusive, it encouraged national unity and humanitarian activities.
