Fungal Secondary Metabolites in Postharvest Disease Management: A Natural Way to Fight Against Food Loss and Waste
摘要
Postharvest diseases are a major cause of global food loss, resulting in significant socioeconomic losses. This problem is intensified further by the use of chemical treatments like fungicide and insecticide, which causes major human health risks and environmental pollution. Fungal secondary metabolites offers a sustainable alternative to these treatments due to their bioactive composition and minimal adverse effects on human health to mitigating postharvest loss. Notably secondary metabolites like polyketides and non-ribosomal peptides synthesized by by fungi have depicted potential to combat postharvest pathogens. Therefore, the aim of this of this chapter is to provide an overview of fungal metabolites, and their application in sustainable postharvest diseases management, aligning with SDG 12.3 to reduce food waste.
