Gender-based violence is a widespread problem that impacts thousands of people in the Global South and manifests itself in many ways that are all equally harmful and intolerable. Even with greater awareness and efforts to address it, this scourge still poses a serious obstacle to the empowerment of both men and women, and to gender equality. This chapter provides an overview of gender-based violence. The chapter begins by defining gender-based violence, discussing types of gender-based violence, and providing a brief overview of gender-based violence in the Global South. The chapter then explores the impact of gender-based violence at the intrapersonal, interpersonal, community, government, and policy levels. After exploring the root causes of gender-based violence, the chapter ends with a discussion on the role that health communication plays in preventing gender-based violence.
