Nature Writing as Minor Literature
摘要
Major literature establishes the national language and reproduces its hegemony over minority languages and people. Minor literature subverts the major language from within. The most famous American nature writer, Henry David Thoreau, was a writer of minor literature who subverted mainstream American culture and the major language of American English from within (despite being canonized) in his minor literature and language of nature writing in the minor genres and non-fiction and polyphonic modes of the essay, letter, journal, nature writing, travel writing in poetic prose and prosaic poetry. Thoreau wrote no novel, nor short stories, and he wrote some poetry, three major genres of literature in English that privilege fiction over “non-fiction.” Nature writing is also minor literature in the sense that its writers are minor prophets in the old testament lineage of the bible who speak truth to power. Like Thoreau, the Australian Aboriginal elder Bill Neidjie was a writer of minor literature and a minor prophet. Both also wrote a word for wetlands in wetland literature that is doubly marginalized within the marginalized literature of “nature writing.” Wetland literature is doubly marginalized within the marginalized literature of “nature writing” and “country writing,” and in critical writing about them.
