This chapter examines the economic achievements of the Lorraine region after 1918 under the guidance of the Nancy chamber of commerce. It shows how the economic leadership in the Nancy chamber of commerce set about creating an economic development plan for Lorraine after the war. It discusses improvements in railways and canals, the development of hydro-electric power from the fall of the Rhine, new initiatives in technical and vocational education, the founding of a banque populaire adapted to the needs of local businesses and the opening of a Nancy stock exchange. It looks at the growth of a cooperative movement in Lorraine to facilitate the reconstruction of areas affected by war damage, a movement which was later copied elsewhere. Lastly, it describes the natalist movement whose aim was to make good the shortfall of population needed for agriculture and industry.
