In this chapter, we provide a brief history of key approaches to mental illness in western countries, showing how feminists have pushed back on traditional psychiatric explanations and treatment models through research demonstrating the links between the psychological distress experienced by women and gender inequalities borne of the patriarchal socio-cultural contexts in which they live. We specifically explore how gendered violence, as a key manifestation of gender inequality, shapes young women’s mental health and how mainstream mental health services often fails to take into account the gendered nature of these experiences in their models of service delivery.
