This chapter delves into the paradoxes derived from the workers’ understanding of collective authorship which, as the same workers in the papers claim, is threatened by ‘class traitors’ who spread unreason, falsehood and deceit from within the press. These class traitors are referred to in the press as ‘beasts of burden’, which stands for workers who cannot think for themselves because they let themselves be manipulated by the bourgeoisie. In the chapter the figure of the class traitor (La Bestia) is to be depicted as a genderless subject. However, in Chap. 4 , this supposedly ‘genderless’ figure is again analyzed in order to show that in the working-class narratives is mostly embodied by women or men depicted as feminine. The figure of La Bestia is studied from the perspective of the Marxist notion of the malleable body shaped by labor. This approach to the body is deemed to set the ground for a later discussion on sexual difference and gender fluidity which will be further developed in Part II of the book. At the end of this chapter, core terms such as Writing, Truth, Reason and Working-class Purity are defined according to these workers’ writings in relation to a fluid understanding of the body which will be central for the rest of the book.
