Bahraini Women Shaping the Built Environment: A Narrative of Challenges and Successes
摘要
Women are globally underrepresented in fields such as Architecture and Engineering. The Kingdom of Bahrain and the Gulf region reflect similar trends, where women’s role, despite some progress, remains limited. This conference paper is part of an exploratory research that was launched in March 2024 seeking to examine the diverse experiences of women navigating the field of Architecture in the Kingdom of Bahrain. It seeks to unpack the gendered barriers they face in accessing this sector, including social norms relating to the fields of education and types of sectors women are encouraged, or discouraged to engage in, and their experiences as professional architects navigating this typically male-dominated field. The study is rooted in local realities and centers the experiences and narratives of women who take part in the research process, including professional architects, as interviewees, and young women students in architecture as co-researchers. The study builds on a thorough review of literature and adopts qualitative methodologies through the use of semi-structured interviews and co-researchers keeping data collection diaries. It uses a blended epistemological approach drawing from both constructivist and constructionist thought, allowing us to center women’s stories while exploring the ways in which gendered narratives, norms and structures shape their experiences. Interviewees’ stories and insights pave the way for future research areas and the formulation of deeper recommendations, which will be further explored in future stages of the research.
