Cranial Implant with 3D Printing Technology and Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA): A Low Cost Option of Cranioplasty for Patients in Developing Country

Cranioplasty is one of the most common neurosurgical procedures performed to repair cranial defect. Many materials and fabrication technique are used to prepare cranial implant in cases where autologous bone is not available. Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) is one of the widely chosen polymer as bone substitute, often termed as bone cement. PMMA fabricated using 3D printed models used in our study have shown better fit, symmetrical shape and restore aesthetic looks of patients. The use of 3D printed implants in medical procedures has several advantages over traditional manufacturing methods. 3D printing allows for greater precision, customization, and quicker implant time. Fabrication of custom shape and sized PMMA implants are shown to have promising results in our study. This has helped to reduce the financial burden to patients as these customized implants are way too cheaper in comparison to others materials and implant preparation. In developing and resource limited countries like Nepal, where patient have to pay out of their pocket for treatment, this 3D printing technology is proven to be a best option for cranioplasty.
