The Potential of Ontologies for Developing Crack Width Control Tools for Concrete Structures

Reinforced concrete has been successfully used as a structural material for 130 years, with the history of concrete spanning over 2000 years. Throughout this period, a vast repository of knowledge has been accumulated, much of it predating the global digital communications infrastructure. In recent decades, there has been a significant effort to digitize this wealth of information. Despite these advancements, the process lacks a conceptual integration that would enable full interoperability of information, essential for building comprehensive knowledge. The concept of the Semantic Web offers a systematic solution to this challenge. The Semantic Web relies on knowledge graphs and ontologies, which categorize information into concepts and define the relationships between them. This paper explores the potential of applying ontologies to the specific domain of crack width control in reinforced concrete structures. The discussion covers the integration of existing ontologies with structural design-related concepts such as BIM, aiming to develop an expert tool addressing crack width requirements within the broader context of service life design.
