Livestock production is expanding globally due to farm concentration and industry consolidation, contributing around 12% of total human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. While often viewed as a climate threat, livestock systems also provide key services like nutrient recycling, carbon storage, and organic fertilization. These multifunctional roles are increasingly at risk from climate change. The chapter argues for recognizing livestock as part of both the climate problem and the solution. It examines global trends, climate impacts, and strategies for integrating livestock into adaptation and mitigation efforts.

摘要

Livestock production is expanding globally due to farm concentration and industry consolidation, contributing around 12% of total human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. While often viewed as a climate threat, livestock systems also provide key services like nutrient recycling, carbon storage, and organic fertilization. These multifunctional roles are increasingly at risk from climate change. The chapter argues for recognizing livestock as part of both the climate problem and the solution. It examines global trends, climate impacts, and strategies for integrating livestock into adaptation and mitigation efforts.
