This chapter draws together different perspectives to present a definition of compassionate leadership, visualising it through a range of different lenses. First, it asks what you consider compassionate leadership to be, then it discusses what the authors think it is and, finally, it draws together the views of leaders of maternity services who have successfully implemented culture change within their organisations. Compassionate leadership theory is described and the misconception that compassionate leadership is weak leadership is challenged. It is established that compassionate and inclusive leadership are synonymous and both are essential for psychological safety. Where compassionate leadership exists, staff will feel safe to speak out about errors, problems and uncertainties, creating safer clinical environments for maternity and neonatal staff and for women and birthing people and neonates. This chapter ends with asking you to complete an exercise asking if you believe you have the qualities of a compassionate leader.
