This chapter addresses the phenomenon of male subjectivity and sadomasochism in several key texts in Old French and Middle High German, culminating in Heinrich von Morungen’s celebrated poem “Narcissus Song” which I read in terms of sadomasochistic violence toward the lady addressed in the poem. This chapter draws extensively on Jacques Lacan’s theory of desire as a process of permanent displacement.
