Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of premature death and severe chronic disability worldwide. Although the recent expansion of clinical investigations has produced several effective drugs for the treatment of CVDs, the long-term prognosis and control of complications remain poor [1]. Considering the growing number of clinical patients and the inadequacies of current medical treatments, there is a strong incentive to find more effective targets for treating, mitigating, or preventing this heterogeneous group of diseases.
