Biochar-Soil-Plant Interactions: A Debate on Sustainable Agriculture in the Context of Climate Change

Biochar offer numerous advantages in agriculture and the environment, including enhancing soil health, promoting crop development and production, sequestering carbon, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and regulating nutrient cycles. This chapter focuses on the biochar role in altering the physical, chemical, and biological attributes of soil. It analyzes how biochar can enhance seed germination and seedling growth, alter crop physiological traits, increase resistance to abiotic and biotic environmental factors, improve productivity, mitigate emission of greenhouse gases, and minimize the nutrient leaching. However, the biochar’s effectiveness in different environmental settings are greatly impacted by the feedstock type, pyrolysis temperature, application rate and method, arbitrary soil characteristics, and plant species. Biochar applied in low concentrations aid in the processes of seed germination and seedling growth. Biochar changed the microbial and abiotic processes around the plant roots, which led to enhanced nutrient disintegration and improved nutrient absorption by the plants. Hence, the incorporation of biochar enhanced the plant’s resistance to diseases, reduced toxic metals, and strengthened the plant to cope with severe environmental stresses. This chapter presents a comprehensive analysis of various impacts of biochars on soils’ physical and chemical properties, plant growth and productivity, as well as environmental issues.
