The Role of Digital Agriculture in Mitigating Climate Change and Ensuring Food Security: An Overview

Food Security is under a growing threat of climate change with the increasing temperatures, the erratic rainfall patterns, and the extreme weather events that are disrupting agricultural productivity and endangering food supplies. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that world agriculture could lose yields by no more than 2%. An increase of 6% by 2050 is expected. The food security for the growing global population will be ensured only when the agricultural practices are adaptive and resilient. In this regard, digital agriculture is gaining a lot of momentum. It includes IoT, big data analytics, AI, and remote sensing technologies, which are critical for transforming agriculture in terms of how it is controlled. Digital tools that assist in precision agriculture make it possible to use resources more efficiently, as they optimizes the irrigation, fertilization, and pest management. Through climate-smart decision-making systems, farmers are equipped with timely weather data, crop modelling tools, and risk management strategies that ensure that they are well prepared to face changing climatic conditions. Further digital platforms enable the farmers to have increased market access, information sharing and supply chain transparency, which in turn result in reduced post-harvest losses and market access for farmers. This chapter deals with the manifold role of digital agriculture in reducing climate change and ensuring food security. It studies the effects of climate change on agriculture, develops the various components of digital agriculture, and investigates the ability of technological deployment to improve resource efficiency so as to guarantee sustainable practices and enhance farmers’ decision-making process. At the same time, it is also acknowledged that digital agriculture has its downsides, such as digital divide, data privacy issues and technology dependency issues. Finally, it also deals with the policy, institutional support in digital literacy development, innovation and the equitable access of these technologies for all farmers.
