Examination of ethical issues of intelligent matter draws on both the ethics of Artificial Intelligence and of nanotechnology. These examinations raise methodological questions regarding how to approach the ethics of emerging technologies. This chapter defends the use of speculation about future scenarios, and the precautionary principle. This is then applied to issues raised by intelligent matter.
