This chapter revisits the thought-experiment about the multi-generational spaceship from the first intermission. The main point is the observation that the situation in this thought-experiment is not all that different from the situation of humanity’s life on earth. Although the timescale is different, we, too, are headed for an assured obliteration, probably by some major planetary disaster, or, if not, eventually by cosmic developments like the heat death of the universe.

摘要

This chapter revisits the thought-experiment about the multi-generational spaceship from the first intermission. The main point is the observation that the situation in this thought-experiment is not all that different from the situation of humanity’s life on earth. Although the timescale is different, we, too, are headed for an assured obliteration, probably by some major planetary disaster, or, if not, eventually by cosmic developments like the heat death of the universe.
