Vibration levels in a reciprocating compressor used for household refrigeration is one of the critical design parameters. In this study, the effect of vibrations in the axis-direction lateral to the piston axis is observed. These vibrations are critical in improving the durability of the journal bearings of the compressor, especially the big end bearing of the connecting rod. The effect of these vibrations is studied in the GT-Suite. Different counterweight designs and arrangements are developed to reduce the vibrations. The effect of these vibrations on the piston tilt angle, minimum film thickness in the big end bearing and the friction power loss is examined in the GT-Suite model. Moreover, solo compressor vibration test results are conducted to verify the reduction of vibration levels in the axis-direction. The prototype compressors with optimized counterweight design will also be given to accelerated life test to see the effect on the durability of the journal bearing of the compressor.

摘要
