A relatively large amount of works have been written about the 1947 debate (e.g. Barghoorn 1948, pp. 214–236, Dunayevskaya 1949, Duda 1994, pp. 216–239, Kerner 1981, Kuczynski 1977, pp. 9–25, Mommen 2011, pp. 126–144, Roh 2018, 145–163), even if the underlying book Changes in the Economy of Capitalism as a Result of the Second World War, published in autumn 1946, is often relativised in its entirety. Against this trend, the book itself (and the problems associated with it) will first be presented in more detail here. Subsequently, the debate of 1947 will be focused upon. But it will also be shown what has happened so that Varga, in 1949, decided to resign.
