Ethical Considerations of Emotion AI Used in the Synthetic Media Generations and Applications
摘要
With the vast advancement and widely spread applications of artificial intelligence, there arise some ethical considerations concerning to what extent human rights are violated, data is breached, and to what extent human emotions are taken into account. Emotion AI being a fairly new field of study focuses on the capabilities of artificial intelligence technologies to perceive, analyze and even respond to human emotions and feelings. On the one hand, it is quite beneficial for humans to interact, and to communicate with machines that are to some extent “emotionally intelligent”. On the other hand, there arise some dangers in terms of the ethical perspective since we humans sometimes do not want other humans to have insights into our internal states and experienced private emotions and feelings. Thus, there is a threat presupposing that in case emotion AI technologies advance to such an extent that they can even measure the intensity of the experienced human emotion(s), they can eventually quite possibly manipulate us humans. As with anything in this life, as they say, every coin has its flip side: so, on the one hand, we humans sometimes do not have an idea exactly what emotion we are experiencing at a given moment in time, hence, technologies endowed with emotion AI can greatly assist us in having a clear-cut idea of our internally experienced states, also in case technologies are endowed with emotion AI, on the emotional levels, we will feel more soothed in interacting with the latters, but on the other hand, if AI technologies have a great amount of information about such an intrinsic phenomenon as human emotions, humans might become more fragile and vulnerable, especially from the perspectives of mental health safety and data protection. Nonetheless, we can do nothing but accept this great advancement in science and we can provide programmers with more deeper insights into the diversity of human emotions and how they can be manifested in our verbal and non-verbal communicative behaviour so that they can be rightly elucidated in the synthetic media created by generative AI, encompassing the emotional aspect as well in the forms of correspondingly depicting emotion faces, generating emotional voices and having emotionally charged speech production in the synthetic media that we consume on a daily basis. This will resultantly make the consumption of synthetic media far more enjoyable and efficient. Yet, there arises the aspect of personal data protection, which we should strive for a better and safer generation of images, also prohibiting data breaches. The present Chapter, thus, explores the advantages and disadvantages, the benefits and pitfalls of emotion AI being applied in the field of synthetic media by means of also providing some insights into further possible efficient developments therein that will be beneficial for our successful human–human-machine co-existence.
