The Emerging Role of AI and Social Robots in University Student Recruitment
摘要
The current study investigates relationships between perceptions of artificial intelligence (AI), the three elements of burnout (emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and academic inefficacy), and ultimately college enrollment. More specifically, we analyze how both positive and negative perceptions of AI among high school students in the United States (U.S.) could serve as a predictor of burnout, and ultimately influence college enrollment. Grounded in the conservation of resource theory (COR), we posit that emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and academic inefficacy are related to intentions to enroll in college. We collected data from high school students, primarily juniors and seniors, ages 15 to 19. Our findings from 160 high school respondents confirm a significant relationship between positive perceptions of AI with emotional exhaustion and cynicism. Our study did not find a significant relationship with academic inefficacy. Furthermore, cynicism and academic inefficacy exhibit a significant negative association with intentions to enroll. We conclude with implications and future research opportunities, such as social robots for higher education.
