In this chapter, the authors draw upon their backgrounds as simulated patient (SP) educators, former SPs, performing arts teachers, professional actors, and a playwright to delve into the integration of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) principles into simulated patient (SP) case development to enhance the realism and depth of the simulation for healthcare learners. During the development of case content, it is essential to involve SP educators and SPs as co-creators in the process. This ensures that SP portrayals are more authentic and representative of diverse patient populations, it enriches educational content and produces a deeper understanding of perspectives of patients. This chapter provides a robust toolkit for human simulation case development, needs assessment, case validation, and suggestions for thoughtful integration of EDI across programs. Through this lens, we aim to create SP case content for an immersive simulated learning environment that reflects the complexities and diversities of real-world patients. The inclusion of EDI in simulation not only improves the educational experience that can only be had by working with an SP but also prepares healthcare learners to deliver more equitable and inclusive care, ultimately leading to better healthcare outcomes.
