Crypto Havens or Criminal Highways? Tackling the Money Laundering Risks of Digital Assets in France
摘要
Money laundering has long been a game of cat and mouse with the financial system. Now, cryptocurrencies, with their intricate and evolving techniques, have entered the scene. This chapter investigates whether these complex digital assets are becoming the new money laundering haven. As cryptocurrencies explode in popularity, a critical question emerges: are their complex techniques making them the preferred tool for criminals to hide their illicit gains? Analyzing money laundering concepts, methods, and preventative measures, the research focuses on the risks of cryptocurrencies in France. We explore how their unique characteristics—such as decentralization and pseudonymity—challenge traditional regulatory frameworks. Findings reveal that while France has progressed in addressing cryptocurrency-related money laundering through regulations like the PACTE Law and the MiCA framework, persistent challenges remain. This study underscores the need for adaptive policies, technological innovation, and international collaboration to mitigate cryptocurrencies’ risks while fostering legitimate use.
