In patients with serious, life-limiting, or life-threatening illness, palliative interventions can offer patients functional independence, a reduction of symptoms, and emotional health and safety as they progress through their disease-specific treatments. Interventional radiologists, who occupy a central role in the multidisciplinary care team and have a broad set of knowledge, training, and experience, are uniquely suited to providing palliative care. Palliative interventions in patients with disease of the abdomen and pelvis include treatments for malignant ascites, nontraumatic abdominal pain, and intestinal obstruction.
