This study investigates the role of oral tradition in intercommunal conflict, focussing on the Oke Aba and Iwo communities in Kwara State, Nigeria. The research aims to show that while oral tradition conveys morals and cultural beliefs, it can also drive communal strife. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used, with 100 adult indigenes participating through questionnaires, interviews, and focus group discussions. The findings reveal that oral tradition often fuels conflict, particularly regarding ancestry, chieftaincy, and boundary issues. Although communities may appear peaceful, unresolved tensions lie beneath the surface, exacerbated by elders’ influential narratives. These narratives, when misinterpreted or manipulated, deepen divisions within and between communities. However, the study also highlights the potential of oral tradition as a tool for conflict resolution. Most respondents agreed that educating the younger generation on community history, with a focus on countering divisive narratives, could reduce tensions. This underscores the need for educational initiatives that promote critical engagement with oral traditions to foster unity. In conclusion, oral tradition holds both the power to incite and resolve conflicts, and its careful use is crucial for promoting peace and cohesion within communities.
