Health and geopolitical challenges are disrupting global trade. The close links between food and energy systems within supply chains have triggered sharp price surges for both commodities, worsening inflation and straining supply networks. These shocks have plunged millions into poverty and food insecurity while heightening political instability, financial market risks, and environmental harm. To better understand these impacts, a study applied k-means clustering (analyzing 26 key indicators from 2019 to 2022) to categorize EU countries based on shared vulnerabilities to the food-energy crisis. This grouping aims to help policymakers design more targeted and effective response strategies. One group was characterized as being in a critical energy scenario because of its reliance on foreign energy, particularly Russian natural gas, but the food industry was judged to be in a better situation. As a result, it is essential to first develop methods for identifying the nations’ vulnerabilities, and then to lessen and mitigate them through measures that provide the systems more resilience.
