Lantana camara, a common invasive weed, has, for reasons that have still to be conclusively determined, developed a plethora of traditional medicinal uses. This chapter has highlighted the multifaceted duality of this plant. Lantana camara is presently used as folk medicine for various ailments, including inflammation, pain, infections, fever, and respiratory issues, and it has a lofty place in traditional folk medicine as an antimalarial agent, where indigenous people rely on the use of Lantana camara with confidence. Phytochemical studies have identified many diverse compounds, including a large number of triterpenoids, especially lantadenes, flavonoids, and essential oils that have also been isolated. Studies in the scientific literature have shown good support for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antimicrobial, antimalarial, and antioxidant properties. That said, the intrinsic toxicity of Lantana camara is its primary deterrent in studying its medicinal properties, associated with toxicity mainly due to lantadenes. A significant focus for future research should involve following similar steps to other plant-based medicines, including standardization and safety of what extracts are tested, isolation of bioactive components known to be safe, and clinical testing in developing antisepsis, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties. Ultimately, with an appropriate understanding of Lantana camara, invasive species may be turned into an opportunity to develop a source of new therapies, bridging traditional ways of knowing with modern pharmacology.
