This chapter serves as a brief conclusion to the volume. It reviews how shifting geopolitical interests have shaped the interpretation of Nessana (Auja Hafir) and the Byzantine Negev since 1800. In addition, it argues that Byzantine Archaeology in the region of historic Palestine has long been influenced by colonial agendas, modern state-building, and evolving global concerns—from imperial defence and trade to environmental change and sustainability. It advocates for a reassessment of Byzantine Studies in the region, challenging its perceived neutrality and emphasising its entanglement with colonial legacies.
