Encounter with Sociology
摘要
On September 28, 1962, in the second grade of elementary school, I received a birthday present: a biography of Hideki Yukawa. Yukawa was a brilliant, meticulous, and hardworking man. Concentration on contemplation. The elation of his discovery of mesons. His relentless quest to unlock the secrets of the world. I was utterly fascinated by the book, read it repeatedly, and decided to live my life in this way. I still keep a copy of this book, Volume 21 of Kaiseisha’s Great Men of the World by Ken Sawada (1962). This is the book that defined my life. Looking again at the book, it was published in 1962 and the third printing was made on September 15, 1962, at the price of 260 yen. Yukawa, born in 1907, was 55 years old at the time. Of the 50 volumes in the series, beginning with Volume I, Hideyo Noguchi, Yukawa was by far the youngest and, at that time, the only one still working.
