Code-switching, the alternation between languages within discourse, occurs at various linguistic levels and is influenced by cognitive, sociolinguistic, and grammatical factors. Using a mixed-method approach, this study examines code-switching patterns among Kannada-English bi/multilinguals. The study involved twenty participants aged 18 to 25 years, including both simultaneous or sequential bilinguals. Data collection utilized the Language Experience and Proficiency Questionnaire (LEAP-Q) (Marian V et al., 2007) and systematic language sample analysis (SALT). Findings indicate that Kannada was predominantly the matrix language, with English serving as the embedded language. Conversational discourse exhibited a higher frequency of code-switching compared to narrative discourse, highlighting differences in linguistic structure and cognitive demands (Myers-Scotton Muysken P, 2000). Intersentential, intrasentential, and extrasentential code-switching patterns were analyzed, revealing significant variations across discourse types (Blom J, Gumperz, 2000). These results contribute to understanding bilingual language processing and have implications for speech-language therapy and multilingual communication strategies. Future research should explore diverse linguistic contexts to enhance knowledge of bilingual cognitive mechanisms.
