Speech-in-noise perception is a frequent complaint among older adults, affecting their ability to communicate effectively. The study examined the potential benefits of short-term piano training on speech-in-noise perception in older adults. Twenty-five individuals aged 50 to 75 years were randomly assigned to one of three groups: Piano Training Group (n = 8), Placebo Training Group (n = 8) and Control Group (n = 9). The piano training group received seven sessions of piano training over two weeks. The Placebo Training Group received five sessions of reading under a delayed auditory feedback lag of 50 ms, and the control group did not receive any training. Speech in noise performance was assessed using standardized Kannada sentence lists in two noise conditions (speech noise and speech babble). The Pre and Post training changes in speech in noise scores were assessed at comfortable level in the binaural mode. Non-parametric tests were used since the data was skewed. The pre-training speech in noise scores were not significantly different between the three groups for both the conditions. The Kruskal-Wallis test indicated a significant difference between the groups in both speech noise (χ2 = 16.45, p < 0.001) and speech babble conditions (χ2 = 19.31, p < 0.001) for the post-training scores. Mann-Whitney analysis indicated that the Piano training group had a greater benefit over both the placebo and no training group in both background noise conditions (p < 0.05). The findings support the contention that even short-term music training in older adults can lead to significant benefits in terms of speech in noise perception due to improved top-down processing and better neural plasticity associated with learning.
