The Use of Novel Solutions and Human-Machine Interaction in Case of Fire Incidents on Containerships
摘要
Maritime transport historically represented the center of global trade with about 90% of the goods’ volumes and values worldwide. Cargo fire represents one of the most important threats for containerships. On one hand, fire causes large losses of humans and/or cargoes, on the other hand fire is impacting coastal zone and marine protected areas causing invaluable damage to the ecosystem. Currently, there are no requirements for the installation of fixed fire detection systems on board of container ships. Innovative strategies for containership fires prevention and management (OVERHEAT) main goal is to prevent, detect, manage and response to fire accidents on board of containerships. OVERHEAT brings novel fire management solutions for Prevention, Early Detection, Management and Response to assure safety of people and the protection of the environment. OVERHEAT will investigate the use of Internet of Things (IoT) sensors (fixed and mobile) and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs) to provide a full Common Operational Picture (COP) to the first responder. The data will be collected at very high frequency allowing building a complete picture of the Area of Interest (AoI). Hence, OVERHEAT prepares a truly new generation of digital fire management solutions: complete, seamless, real time and in line with IMO (International Maritime Organization) regulations (integrated in the vessel IT infrastructure). This paper focuses on the application of the IoT sensors and UAS and provides the first findings of the trials executed.
