Economic Potential of Recyclable Wastes in Municipal Solid Waste: A Case Study of the Marmara Region
摘要
Globally, the rapid rate of population growth is generating increasingly complex socio-economic and environmental pressures on societies, leading to a significant increase in municipal solid waste (MSW) production. This situation, particularly in conjunction with advancing urbanization processes, necessitates urgent regulatory adjustments to municipal solid waste management (MSWM) systems. MSWM encompasses the collection, transportation, and disposal of all nonliquid and nongaseous solid materials from residential, commercial, institutional, construction and demolition, and street-sweeping sources. In this study, analyses focused on packaging waste were conducted based on waste quantities obtained from cities in Turkey’s Marmara Region. The potential economic benefits to the national economy from the recycling of packaging waste have been evaluated. The study’s findings emphasize the importance of strict implementation of laws and the enhancement of inspection mechanisms to establish an effective solid waste management system. Furthermore, the necessity of technical support from authorized institutions; the promotion of waste reduction, reuse, and recycling activities; the expansion of educational programs; and the implementation of awareness-raising campaigns across society are underscored. Within this context, it is anticipated that zero waste practices can contribute to sustainable development goals and advance Turkey’s waste management strategies.
