This chapter explores early modern Russian Orthodox literature about the conception and upbringing of children. Focussing on this body of literature, it documents the conceptual tightening of terminology pertaining to gender and sexuality that occurred during the late-seventeenth and early-eighteenth centuries. In particular, it argues that in this period sexual morality came to be rooted increasingly in a binary understanding of gender.
