This chapter explores how participants conceptualise their communities and the degree to which they identify with them. The chapter is divided into two sections. The first section analyses participants’ criteria for inclusion and exclusion within their idea of community, focusing on how factors such as gender, sexuality, social class, and vulnerability to HIV determine communal membership. The second section investigates the varying levels of attachment they exhibit towards their community, ranging from strong ties to strategic connections, and in some cases, minimal affiliation. Additionally, it explores what these differing attachments to the idea of community reveal about participants’ symbolic capital and social position.
