Reforming the Power Sector for Clean and Affordable Energy in Africa
摘要
This study discusses how reforms in the energy sector improve access to clean energy in Africa. Specifically, it explores sector reforms in Africa, drivers of green energy integration, importance and challenges, and the role of development partners supporting the transition. The chapter identifies four key reforms such as regulatory, restructuring, competition reforms, and increased private sector involvement. Key drivers of clean energy integration are abundant renewable resources, climate change, climate finance, COVID-19, technological advances, and evolving policies. The benefits of clean energy adoption include energy diversification, improved energy security, equitable access, economic growth, and reduced environmental and health costs. However, challenges remain, such as high initial costs, limited technical expertise, financial constraints, governance issues, and weak infrastructure. Development partners have been instrumental in supporting clean energy integration through financing, capacity building, risk mitigation, and the provision of modern technologies. We recommend that policymakers should still continue to reform the power sector to enhance the access of clean energy.
