Energy Outcomes in Africa: Is Digital Infrastructure Relevant?
摘要
This chapter examines the role of digital infrastructure in improving energy outcomes in Africa. Although the continent has vast energy potential, access, reliability, and efficiency remain limited. Progress is being made, with a shift toward cleaner fuels and reduced dependence on fossil fuel imports. Carbon emissions are mainly concentrated in the power sector, especially in Southern Africa. A scatter diagram shows a positive correlation between digital infrastructure and energy outcomes, particularly with electricity access. Case studies across Africa highlight how digital tools enhance energy access and efficiency. However, challenges such as infrastructure deficits, limited technical and institutional capacity, regulatory misalignment, and affordability and financing barriers continue to restrict the full benefits of digital integration in the energy sector.
