A Concise Overview of Sources, Impacts, and Consequences of Micropollutants on the Environment

Micropollutants are miniature forms of pollutants present in our surroundings. These pollutants are found in extremely low concentrations, measurable only in parts per billion or parts per million. They can exist in various forms, such as agricultural products, personal care items, industrial chemicals, medications, and household products. These include substances like organic pollutants, flame retardants, hormones, heavy metals, cosmetics, endocrine suppressors, herbicides, and micro-polymers. Micropollutants enter the environment through several pathways. Cosmetics, personal care products, and medications used daily often run off into sewage systems or are disposed of in garbage, eventually ending up in smaller water bodies or landfills, which introduces these pollutants into water and soil. Many industries also produce micropollutants on a large scale. Without proper treatment, these untreated micropollutants can enter seas and oceans. Industries release micropollutants into the air as well, contributing to smog, smoke, and dust and releasing many other harmful chemical compounds. The use of pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, and complex fertilizers also introduces these micropollutants into the air and soil. Subsequent rainfall on these lands can result in the runoff of micropollutants into water bodies. The presence of these micropollutants in ecosystems leads to ecological imbalances, affecting both biodiversity and human civilization. Many plant and animal species are severely impacted by these pollutants, which can retard their growth and reproductive capabilities. This eventually leads to the biomagnification of micropollutants, with accumulation increasing at subsequent trophic levels. Addressing these issues may require the development of suitable technologies and the implementation of authorized regulations, which could place an economic strain on waste management systems.
