The climate and ecological emergency profoundly challenge educational institutions, demanding urgent and systemic transformation. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is a key response, requiring institutions to integrate sustainability into curricula, pedagogy, governance, and operations. This chapter examines the critical role of educational leadership in fostering institutional culture change towards sustainability. It explores how leaders act as change agents, translating policy into practice, embedding sustainability values, and overcoming resistance within entrenched academic structures. Drawing on transformational and adaptive leadership theories, the chapter highlights how successful leaders inspire vision, build capacity, and engage stakeholders to cultivate a shared commitment to sustainability. Challenges such as institutional inertia, lack of resources, and competing priorities are critically analysed alongside strategies to navigate these barriers through strategic planning, professional development, and collaborative leadership models. The chapter also situates educational leadership within broader policy landscapes, emphasizing the necessity of systemic support to embed sustainability in education effectively, concluding with some thoughts on areas for future research and practice.

摘要
